PHILIP GLASS ENSEMBLE

The Philip Glass Ensemble (PGE) comprises the principal performers of the music of Philip Glass. In 1968, Glass founded the PGE as a laboratory for his music – many of the composer’s most celebrated works were subsequently composed for the PGE, including the core concert work Music in Twelve Parts and the soundtrack for the powerful Koyaanisqatsi trilogy. As inimitable interpreters of Glass’ prolific work, the PGE has a celebrated 50+ year history of playing to packed houses on major stages around the globe, including Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Sydney Opera House and more.

Koyaanisqatsi: Live with Film

Perhaps its best known program, the Philip Glass Ensemble has toured Koyaanisqatsi: Live with Film for over 40 years. Directed and produced by Godfrey Reggio, Koyaanisqatsi is a non-narrative, experimental film that explores the balance (or lack thereof) between humanity, technology and the environment. The film has been embraced as a cult-classic with Glass’ iconic score deemed integral to its success. The film’s subject matter is as (if not more) relevant today as it was during its release 42 years ago, taking audiences on a dazzling and thought-provoking ride.

“Early Works”

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of the PGE, “Early Works” honors Glass’ special relationship with his eponymous ensemble. The program is a journey through the prolific composer’s most popular works, including selections from the “walkman-style” Glassworks album, marathon concert work Music in Twelve Parts, (in)famous opera Einstein on the Beach, and more the program. All pieces in this program were composed specifically for – and are exclusively performed by – the Philip Glass Ensemble.
